Blood Tests for Weight Loss: Find What’s Holding You Back
Eating well and exercising but the scale won’t budge? Before blaming willpower, check your blood. Hidden thyroid problems, insulin resistance, hormonal imbalances, and nutrient deficiencies can all sabotage weight loss efforts. The right blood tests can reveal these barriers — and once you know the cause, you can fix it.

Ask your GP to run these tests. Most are covered by Medicare when there is a clinical indication. Fasting insulin and HOMA-IR may need to be specifically requested.
Why Standard Blood Tests Miss Weight Loss Barriers
Fasting glucose is tested, but NOT fasting insulin
Your glucose can be normal for 5–15 years while insulin quietly rises. HOMA-IR catches insulin resistance years before glucose does.
TSH is tested, but subclinical hypothyroidism is ignored
A TSH of 3.5–4.5 is "normal" but many people gain weight above 2.5. Free T3 (the active thyroid hormone) is rarely checked.
Testosterone is not routinely tested in women
High testosterone + low SHBG is the hallmark of PCOS, which affects 1 in 10 women and makes weight loss extremely difficult.
Ferritin "normal" starts at 15, but optimal is 50+
A ferritin of 20 is technically normal but causes fatigue, making exercise feel impossible. You can’t out-diet exhaustion.
SmarterBlood shows where you sit WITHIN each range — not just whether you are “in range”. A ferritin of 18 and a ferritin of 180 are both “normal”, but they tell very different stories about your energy levels.
