Screenshot Your Blood Test and Turn It Into a Graph

Upload a screenshot from My Health Record, Laverty, QML, or a photo of a paper report — SmarterBlood's AI reads every number and builds an interactive trend graph in about 30 seconds.

Yes — Screenshots Work

SmarterBlood accepts JPG, PNG, HEIC (iPhone), and PDF files. If you have a screenshot of your blood test from My Health Record, the Laverty Patient Results app, QML ePathology, Sullivan Nicolaides, or a photo of a printed report — upload it directly. The AI reads the numbers using the same multi-model vision pipeline that processes faxed documents and degraded scans.

The key constraint is image quality: clear, well-lit, in-focus images produce excellent results. Blurry, dark, or heavily angled photos reduce accuracy. When a PDF is available, it is always the better choice — but a good screenshot is a reliable second option.

PDF: Best accuracy
Clear screenshot: Very good
Photo of paper: Good if well-lit

Step-by-Step Guide

1
Open your blood test results on screen

Open My Health Record, the Laverty app, QML ePathology, Sullivan Nicolaides, Australian Clinical Labs, or any Australian pathology portal on your phone or computer. Navigate to the specific blood test you want to graph.

TIP

If you have a PDF link in your email from the pathology lab, download the PDF directly — PDF uploads give the highest extraction accuracy.

2
Take a screenshot (or photograph a paper report)

On iPhone: press the side button + volume up simultaneously. On Android: press power + volume down. For paper reports, photograph in good natural light with the page flat and the camera directly above the text.

TIP

Zoom in on the results table before screenshotting if your screen shows navigation bars or headers that are not part of the results.

3
Open SmarterBlood and tap Upload

Go to smarterblood.org and sign in (or create a free account in 30 seconds). Tap the Upload button and select your screenshot from your phone's Photos app or file picker.

TIP

On Samsung Galaxy devices, the file picker defaults to "Camera" mode. Tap "Files" or "Gallery" to find your saved screenshot.

4
Wait approximately 30 seconds

SmarterBlood's AI reads every number from your image. Four independent AI and OCR systems cross-check each value. If the image is rotated or degraded, the system automatically retries with different orientations.

TIP

Larger or multi-page PDFs may take up to 60 seconds. You can close the tab — processing continues in the background and you will receive a notification when done.

5
View your interactive graph

Every blood marker appears as an interactive trend graph with your reference range shaded. Tap any marker to see its full explanation in plain English, its category, and what trends typically mean.

TIP

Upload your older screenshots too — the graph will show how each marker has changed over months or years.

Supported File Formats

PDF
Excellent
Downloaded from pathology portal, email attachment

Best accuracy. Text is machine-readable, no image recognition needed.

PNG screenshot
Excellent
Android screenshot, desktop screenshot

Very good accuracy for clear on-screen results.

JPG screenshot
Good
Android screenshot, some email clients

Very good accuracy. Minor compression artefacts rarely affect numbers.

HEIC
Good
iPhone Live Photo default format

Accepted directly. iOS users do not need to convert.

JPG photo of paper
Good
Phone camera pointed at printed report

Good accuracy if well-lit, flat, and in focus. Reduces to fair if angled or shadowed.

PNG photo of paper
Good
Phone camera with PNG setting

Same as JPG photo. Lighting and focus are the key variables.

Tips for Best Results

Use a PDF when you can

If your pathology portal offers a PDF download, use it. PDF text is machine-readable and bypasses image recognition entirely. Accuracy is higher and processing is faster.

Screenshot only the results table

You do not need to capture the full page, header, or navigation bar. A tightly cropped image of the results table reduces file size and keeps all the important content in focus.

High screen brightness for app screenshots

Before screenshotting, turn your phone brightness to maximum. Dim screens produce darker images where some numbers may be harder to read.

Natural light for paper photos

Photograph paper reports near a window in daylight. Avoid direct flash on glossy paper — the glare obscures text. A flat dark surface beneath the paper improves contrast.

Camera directly above the page, not at an angle

Angled photos cause perspective distortion. The text rows appear to converge and become harder to read. Hold the camera directly above the paper, parallel to the page.

Zoom in if your report has very small text

Some multi-page lab reports use small fonts for the results table. Zoom in on the key section before screenshotting to ensure numbers are clearly visible.

Worked Examples

These are typical scenarios from Australian users who upload screenshots rather than PDFs.

Full blood count screenshot from My Health Record
WHAT HAPPENS

User screenshots the FBC results page in the My Health Record app on iPhone. The PNG screenshot is uploaded. SmarterBlood extracts haemoglobin, MCV, MCH, MCHC, white cell count, platelet count, and all differential counts. Interactive graph shows each marker against the Australian reference range.

RESULT

All 14 FBC markers extracted correctly. Haemoglobin trend graph shows a gradual decline over three tests spanning two years — previously invisible because the user only ever saw single-visit results.

Photo of a printed lipid and liver panel from the GP
WHAT HAPPENS

User photographs a printed biochemistry result from their GP on white paper under natural light. JPG uploaded. SmarterBlood extracts LDL, HDL, triglycerides, total cholesterol, ALT, AST, GGT, alkaline phosphatase, bilirubin, albumin.

RESULT

All 10 markers extracted. Slightly elevated ALT flagged with plain-English explanation and suggestion to discuss with GP. User realises this is the third test in a row with elevated ALT.

Thyroid and iron panel screenshot from Laverty Patient Results
WHAT HAPPENS

User screenshots the Laverty app on Android. PNG file uploaded. SmarterBlood extracts TSH, free T4, serum ferritin, iron, transferrin saturation.

RESULT

Low ferritin (18 ug/L, below the 20 ug/L lower reference) flagged. TSH in normal range. User generates a Dear Doctor letter for their upcoming GP appointment highlighting the low ferritin alongside their fatigue symptoms.

Troubleshooting Common Problems

Blurry screenshot or photo

Re-take the image. For photos of paper, ensure good lighting and focus. For screen screenshots, your screen was likely too dim — increase brightness and screenshot again.

Only some markers were extracted

The page may have been partially visible or cut off. Scroll the results table to ensure the full list is on screen before screenshotting. Multi-page reports should be uploaded one page at a time (or as a single PDF).

The report is across multiple pages

Upload each page as a separate image, or export the full multi-page PDF from your pathology portal and upload it in one go. SmarterBlood automatically combines results across pages.

Wrong values extracted (OCR error)

This is rare but can happen with very degraded images. Check the extracted values against your original report. If a value looks wrong, use the edit function in your dashboard to correct it, or re-upload a cleaner image.

My Samsung Galaxy only shows Camera in the file picker

This is a known Samsung One UI behaviour. Tap the menu or "More" option in the file picker to access "Files" or open your Gallery app first, then share the image to SmarterBlood.

iPhone HEIC file not accepted

SmarterBlood accepts HEIC directly. If you see an error, go to iPhone Settings > Camera > Formats and switch to "Most Compatible" (JPEG). This saves future photos as JPG which is universally accepted.

"Processing failed" error

Very large or very low-quality images occasionally fail. Try downloading the PDF version from your pathology portal instead. If the problem persists, contact support.
