Blood Test Results in My Health Record

How to find your pathology results in My Health Record — on desktop, iPhone, or Android — plus what to do if they're missing.

The Short Answer

If your blood test was ordered by a GP and processed by Sonic Healthcare, Healius, Australian Clinical Labs, or a public hospital lab, your result is almost certainly in My Health Record. There's a default 7-day delay before you can see it (so your GP can call you about anything serious first). After that, results stay in your MHR forever.

Access them via my.gov.au on desktop, or the Express Plus Medicare or My Health Record app on your phone. Tap Documents > Pathology Reports.

Most GP results: Yes
Self-ordered private tests: No
7-day default delay

Which Pathology Providers Upload to MHR?

Most of Australia's major pathology groups participate in My Health Record. Here's who uploads, who doesn't, and what to do about it.

Sonic Healthcare (Douglass Hanly Moir, Sullivan Nicolaides, Melbourne Pathology, QML)
Yes — Default Upload

Australia's largest pathology group. Routinely uploads results to MHR within 1–2 business days of report finalisation.

Healius (Laverty Pathology, Western Diagnostic, Dorevitch)
Yes — Default Upload

Standard upload to MHR by default. Patients can opt out by ticking the box on the request form.

Australian Clinical Labs (ACL)
Yes — Default Upload

Listed pathology provider with full MHR integration. Same 7-day default patient access delay applies.

Public hospital pathology (NSW Health Pathology, Pathology Queensland, etc.)
Mostly

Most state public pathology services upload to MHR. Some smaller regional labs may have delays.

i-screen (Sonic DTC)
No — Opt In Required

Direct-to-consumer service. Results sent only to the patient by default — no GP, no MHR upload. You can opt in to share with your GP.

Lab Test Online (ACL DTC)
No — Opt In Required

Self-ordered private tests. Results sent to your email only unless you specifically request MHR upload.

Pathlab Direct, MyHealthChecks, Healthscope DTC
No — Opt In Required

Private wellness panels. Results delivered to you directly — not uploaded to MHR by default.

Cosmetic and longevity clinics (private testing)
Sometimes

Highly variable. Some upload, some don't. Always ask the clinic specifically before paying.

The 7-Day Delay — What It Is and How to Change It

By default, pathology reports and diagnostic imaging reports are hidden from patients in My Health Record for 7 days after upload. Healthcare providers (your GP, specialist, hospital staff) can see them immediately — but you can't.

Why? The delay exists so your GP has time to read the result and contact you if there's something serious or distressing. Cancer markers, HIV results, very abnormal kidney or liver findings — the policy assumes a doctor should explain those, not have you find out alone scrolling through an app.

How to change it: Sign in to MHR, click Profile & Settings > Notifications and Settings > Document Access. You can set pathology and imaging reports to be visible immediately. Most adults change this; it's your record.

Why Some Results Are Missing

If you can see most of your tests but not one specific result, here are the six most common reasons and what to do.

Test was paid for privately (DTC services)

i-screen, Lab Test Online, Pathlab Direct, MyHealthChecks and similar self-order services do NOT upload to MHR by default. The result is sent to you directly, often by email PDF.

Fix: Ask the provider whether they can upload to MHR. Most won't. Save the PDF and upload to SmarterBlood for analysis instead.

Patient or doctor opted out for that test

Either you ticked the “Do not upload to My Health Record” box on the request form, or the GP did. Sometimes done for sensitive tests (sexual health, mental health, drug screening).

Fix: Ask your GP for a paper or PDF copy of the report. They can also re-issue and upload it if you change your mind.

Older test (pre-2019)

MHR became opt-out by default in early 2019. Tests done before that may not have been uploaded. Some providers backfilled, most didn't.

Fix: Contact the original pathology lab and request a copy. They are required by law to keep records for at least 7 years (longer for paediatric).

Hospital pathology in a smaller state service

Most public hospital labs upload, but a few regional and remote services have integration gaps. Inpatient blood tests sometimes go straight to the hospital chart, not MHR.

Fix: Request a copy through the hospital's medical records department. There's usually a small fee and a 1–2 week wait.

Cosmetic, fertility, or specialist clinic ran the test in-house

IVF clinics, weight loss clinics, hormone optimisation clinics, and longevity clinics often run their own tests or use small specialty labs that don't connect to MHR.

Fix: The clinic will give you a printed or PDF report on request. Some charge a small fee for re-issuing.

Test result is suppressed due to clinical concern

Rare, but a pathologist can flag a result as not suitable for direct patient access (typically when the result indicates serious or distressing disease that needs to be discussed by a GP first).

Fix: Speak with your GP. They will release the report directly to you once they've had the discussion.

Privacy Controls You Have

My Health Record gives you fine-grained control over who sees what. Most people leave the defaults, but if you have specific privacy concerns, these are your tools.

Record Access Code (RAC)

A 4–8 digit code you set. Once enabled, healthcare providers must enter the code before they can see any of your record. You give the code only to providers you trust.

Use this if you want general restriction across all your records.

Limited Document Access Code (LDAC)

A separate code for specific documents you want to keep private. The document still exists in your record but is hidden behind this code.

Use for sensitive single reports (sexual health, mental health, genetic).

Remove Document

You can remove any document from your record entirely. The original lab still has it (they have to by law), but it disappears from MHR for healthcare providers.

Use if a document was uploaded that you didn’t want shared.

Emergency Access Code

In a genuine emergency, healthcare providers can override your access codes. The override is logged and audited.

Automatic safeguard — nothing for you to set up.

Audit log

You can see exactly who has accessed your record, when, and which documents they viewed.

Check this any time you want to verify privacy.

Cancel My Health Record entirely

You can cancel your record at any time. After cancellation, your data is retained but inaccessible to healthcare providers. You can reinstate later.

Nuclear option — if you don’t want to use MHR at all.

What Healthcare Providers See vs What You See

Healthcare providers and patients see slightly different versions of My Health Record. Understanding this helps you ask the right questions when something looks off.

What Your GP Sees
  • All pathology reports immediately on upload (no 7-day delay)
  • Imaging reports immediately
  • Hospital discharge summaries
  • Specialist letters
  • Medication history (PBS dispensing data)
  • Immunisation history (AIR)
  • Advance care planning documents
  • Emergency contacts
What You See
  • Pathology reports after the 7-day delay (or immediately if you change settings)
  • Imaging reports after 7 days
  • All your hospital discharge summaries
  • Specialist letters (if uploaded)
  • Your full medication history
  • Your full immunisation history
  • Audit log of who has accessed your record
  • Privacy controls and settings

How to Opt Out (Per-Test or Entirely)

Option 1: Per-test opt-out

On every pathology request form there's a tickbox: “Do not upload to My Health Record”. Tick it, and that single test won't be uploaded. You can also tell the collector at the pathology centre verbally and they'll add a note. Some labs let you call and request retrospective removal of a single result.

Option 2: Cancel My Health Record entirely

Sign in to MHR, click Profile & Settings > Cancel My Record. Confirm the cancellation. Your data is retained for legal reasons but becomes inaccessible to healthcare providers. You can reinstate at any time.

Option 3: Restrict who can access

Set up a Record Access Code (RAC). Healthcare providers will need the code to see anything in your record. You give the code only to your GP and trusted specialists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are my blood test results automatically in My Health Record?

Most pathology providers in Australia (Sonic Healthcare, Healius, Australian Clinical Labs, Laverty, Douglass Hanly Moir) upload results to My Health Record by default unless you opt out. There is a 7-day default delay before patients can view results, giving GPs time to discuss them with you first.

How do I view my blood test results in My Health Record?

Sign in to myGov, link your My Health Record, then click Documents > Pathology Reports. On mobile, use the Express Plus Medicare app and tap My Health Record. Results appear as PDF reports identical to the lab original.

Why are some of my blood tests missing from My Health Record?

Common reasons: the test was ordered by a private clinic that does not upload to MHR, the GP or pathology lab opted out for that specific test, the test was paid for privately at a direct-to-consumer service like i-screen, or the result is older than 2019 (when uploads became standard).

Can I opt out of having results uploaded to My Health Record?

Yes. You can opt out entirely (cancel your My Health Record), or set per-document access controls. You can also tell each pathology lab not to upload by ticking the relevant box on the pathology request form, or by calling the lab.

What is the 7-day delay on pathology results in My Health Record?

By default, pathology and diagnostic imaging reports are hidden from patients for 7 days after upload. This allows your GP to review the results and contact you about anything significant first. You can change this setting in My Health Record so results appear immediately.

Can I download my blood test PDFs from My Health Record?

Yes. Each pathology report in MHR can be opened, printed, or saved as a PDF. SmarterBlood lets you upload these PDFs and analyses every marker with AI in plain English.

Who can see my blood test results in My Health Record?

By default, any healthcare provider involved in your care can view your record. You can restrict access using a Record Access Code (so only people with the code can view), or a Limited Document Access Code for specific reports.

What is a Record Access Code?

A 4-8 digit code you set in My Health Record settings. Once enabled, healthcare providers must enter the code before they can see any of your record. You give the code only to providers you trust. There is also an Emergency Access Code override for genuine emergencies.
